It is said that the solo practice of the Tai Chi form is only half of the Tai Chi training. Push Hands or partner training is the other component. Together they form the yin and yang aspects of the Tai Chi system.
Learning Push Hands gives students insight into how they learn and address weaknesses which would normally go unnoticed in their Tai Chi form.
Traditional training progresses from shallow to deep. At first, we think we understand. This is because at this stage our experience and ability is limited to our paradigm. Only after our training goes deeper can we realise how little we know.
Push Hands is a two person exercise so it teaches us how to interact with others. This reveals many hidden weaknesses in our practice, such as tension, resistance, poor posture, weak legs, fear of contact, over-reacting and under-reacting. Push Hands develops the ability to overcome a greater force with a more skilful one.
In class, the instructor will practise with each student. Also, some of the students are more advanced. This helps to “feed the baby”, a Chinese term for nurturing a beginner’s skills. Your partner is contributing to your development. You cannot develop to a high level or understand the subtleties if your teacher does not help you to feel what is happening.
Push Hands training is a very efficient method for learning self defence skills, especially when you are grabbed or held. It also teaches you to move your body as a whole to generate greater power. You are learning techniques and developing your ability to protect yourself in a non-violent, safe environment.
Push Hands trains our kinesthetic awareness so we become more sensitive to touch or physical contact. This sensitivity is at a much higher level than our normal state. This ultimately will enable you to sense an attack and to respond accordingly.
Push Hands is a major development in Chinese internal martial arts culture. Due to its deep connection with Taoist philosophy, it embodies the principles of balance and harmony, teaching the practitioner to maintain his centre under adverse conditions. This develops awareness, poise, power and an inner confidence. Overall, Push Hands is one of the most efficient teaching tools available, especially for internal arts students. It combines hands-on training with a partner to explore the principles and practices of Tai Chi in a safe, enjoyable and nurturing environment.
